LONDON: Tom Cruise, the 62-year-old Hollywood Megastar, who played the role of a Naval Fighter Pilot in the 1986 movie Top Gun, and its 2022 sequel Top Gun: Maverick, has been bestowed upon the highest civilian (Distinguished Public Service) award for his contribution and dedication to the US Navy through his work during a ceremony held at Longcross Studios here on Tuesday (17th December, 2024).

US Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro, while presenting the award said that the work of Tom Cruise had inspired generations to serve in US Navy and Marine Corps. According to the official statement his work in the film industry “increased public awareness and appreciation for the Navy’s highly trained personnel and the sacrifices they make while in uniform.”

Receiving the Award Tom Cruise expressed gratitude for the extraordinary acknowledgement and said: “I’m happy I have been able to be a source of inspiration to many of the sailors who serve today or have served in the past…The effort was not just on my end, but the cast and crew I work with on all our sets. They are what really bring the work to life.”
