WHITE HOUSE: President Donald Trump has symbolically accepted the Nobel Peace Prize (2025) Medal here on 15th Jan, 2026, from the 58-year-old Venezuelan Opposition Leader María Coria Machado, who was awarded the non-transferable insignia by Nobel Institute on 10th Oct, last year ‘for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.‘
Following her rendezvous with the American president she termed her first personal meeting with him as historic. Donald Trump, while taking to the Social Media called the symbolic presentation ‘a wonderful gesture of mutual respect’. But despite all the pleasantries Trump did not endorse her as the new head of state despite her claim of winning the 2024 polls.
Prior to her Thursday meeting with US President Donald Trump, Machado called the presentation as a sign of the brotherhood between her country and the US in their fight for freedom against tyranny: “And 200 years in history, the people of Bolivar are giving back to the heir of Washington a medal – in this case a medal of the Nobel Peace Prize – as a recognition for his unique commitment with our freedom.”
Taking to X María Machado stated: “This recognition of the struggle of all Venezuelans is a boost to conclude our task: to conquer Freedom. We are on the threshold of victory and today, more than ever, we count on President Trump, the people of the United States, and the democratic nations of the world as our principal allies to achieve Freedom and democracy. I dedicate this prize to the suffering people of Venezuela and to President Trump for his decisive support for our cause!”
Jorgen Watne Frydnes, the chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee in Oslo, noted: “As the leader of the democratic forces in the Venezuela, she is one of the most extraordinary examples of civilian courage in Latin America in recent times”. Machado, an industrial engineer who lives in hiding in Venezuela, said in her video message that Nobel Peace Prize 2025 was an achievement of a whole society: “I am just one person. I certainly do not deserve this.”
