Two Policemen guarding Polio workers in Mardan gunned down

MARDAN: Two Police constables Shakir and Syed Raza, who were on security duty here for the polio team and were on their way back to the police station on a motorcycle after safely dropping the team off, were gunned down by unknown assailants who managed to bolt from the scene of crime. 

Taking to the Twitter spokesman for the KP government, Kamran Bangash stated: “The martyrdom of two policemen guarding the polio team in Mardan was deeply saddening. Expressing regret over the martyrdom of the police personnel, Chief Minister Mehmood Khan ordered a full investigation into the matter and offered condolences to the family members including KP police.”

DPO informed that the policemen died on the spot According to the DPO, the two policemen died on the spot. The bodies were shifted to the Mardan District Headquarters Hospital for post-mortem. KP Chief Minister Mahmood Khan commented: “The elements involved in the incident are the enemies of our children. The provincial government is committed to rid the province of the poliovirus.”

Moreover, officials of National Emergency Operations Centre had informed Newspakitstan.TV that a supplementary dose of Vitamin A drops were also being administered to children aged six to fifty nine months during this campaign to build general immunity among susceptible children to protect them from polio and other diseases.

It is pertinent to mention here that such attacks are carried out by militants time and again. In the month of January 2020 a Police constable  accompanying the anti-polio team was shot dead by unknown gunmen in Takht-e-Nasrati area. An ritual the LEAs have cordoned off the area and started search operation to arrest the culprits. According to details a five-day polio immunization drive involving some 285,000 polio workers is presently going on in Pakistan to vaccinate over 40 million children under the age of five.
