Attacks on Muslims: UK PM chairs Cobra meeting

LONDON: PM Keir Starmer has chaired a Cabinet Office Briefing Rooms (COBRA) meeting on Monday (5th August, 2024) to ponder over the far-right riots across England.

PM, during his rendezvous with Ministers and Police Chiefs (including Scotland Yard boss Mark Rowley) discussed how to contain the riots.

It may be recalled that three young girls (6, 7, 9) were stabbed to death, while 10 others were gravely wounded by a British-born Rwandan named Axel Rudakubana who is about to be 18.

Taking advantage of the situation, Far Right activists misused Social Media to spread rumours that a Muslim Asylum-Seeker was involved in the killing of the girls at Taylor Swift-themed dance classes.

The violence, that commenced in Southport, spread allover the country. In this, England’s worst rioting in 13 years, several Police Officers were injured.

Scores of rioters (who attacked Mosques, set vehicles and properties belonging to the Muslim community on fire and looted their stores) have been taken into custody.

Announcing provision of sufficient force to protect Mosques and other places belonging to Muslims, and severe punishments to those involved in crimes, the PM said: “We will not tolerate attacks on Mosques or our Muslim Community”.
