NEW YORK/ISLAMABAD: United Nations and Pakistan regret the hanging of the Jamaat-i-Islami Bangladesh chief Motiur Rahman Nizami.
In a press briefing here on Wednesday, the spokesman of the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that UN chief stands against the death penalty under any circumstances, reflecting the global trend away from capital punishment.
“The United Nations has raised concerns to Bangladesh over the handling of this case,” he said.
Earlier on Wednesday, Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesperson Nafees Zakaria also expressed concerns over the hanging JI chief.
According to a statement issued by Foreign Office, Mr. Zakaria said the only sin of Nizami was that he upheld the constitution and laws of Pakistan.
“The act of suppressing the Islamic party by killing its leaders without any proof is completely against the spirit of democracy,” he stated.
Zakariya said that Bangladesh government has started to execute the party leaders against the law. Human rights groups, international organisations, and international legal figures are opposing the illegitimate act by the government.
He further said that the execution of Nizami and other JI leaders by the Sheikh Hasina-led government is a sign of elimination for those people who elected Nizami as their representative in the Parliament.
He offered condolences to the bereaved family members and the followers of Nizami.
