UN, US laud Pakistan’s anti-honour killing bill

NEW YORK: The United Nations and the United States have welcomed the bill passed by Pakistan’s parliament against honour killings.

Deputy Spokesman for the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General, Farhan Haq said on Saturday that the UN has been expressing its concern over the cases of so-called honour killings and anything that is done to end this practice was welcome.

Meanwhile, the United States has also appreciated the legislation against the honour killings.

In a daily press briefing, US State Department Spokesperson John Kirby said the passage of this bill is a good gesture and an important milestone for the protection of women in Pakistan.

He said spreading awareness and bringing the culprits to justice is vital.

The US will continue supporting Islamabad on these steps. The State Department spokesperson has also encouraged Pakistan and India to hold dialogue over the issue of Kashmir.

Kirby said the US has been working to de-escalate tensions in the region.
