Unidentified men attack Kabul Airport, Afghan soldier killed

KABUL: Unidentified snipers opened fire at the Afghan Security Force personnel supporting the civilian evacuation at the Gate 4 of the Airport here Monday (23rd of August, 2021)  4.15AM local time.

When reportedly Afghan, American and German soldiers retaliated, an Afghan soldier lost his life while another three personnel sustained bullet wounds. It is yet not known whether the suspected snipers’ bullet killed the soldier or a friendly fire. However, according to Emergency (an Italian humanitarian organization that operates hospitals here), said that six individuals with non-fatal bullet wounds were taken to the hospital from the airport.

Before the gun-battle of Monday 23rd of August, seven people (including a toddler) were crushed to death when unruly mob attempted to enter the Kabul Airport. Taliban on Sunday (22nd of August) blamed the United States for the chaotic evacuation of tens of thousands of Afghans and foreigners from Kabul, one week after the Taliban  returned to power.

US had warned of security threats and the EU admitted it was impossible to evacuate everyone at risk from the Taliban, who have vowed a softer version of their brutal rule from 1996 to 2001. But terrified Afghans continue to try to flee, deepening a tragedy at Kabul airport where the United States and its allies have been unable to cope with the huge numbers of people trying to get on evacuation flights.

“America, with all its power and facilities… has failed to bring order to the airport. There is peace and calm all over the country, but there is chaos only at Kabul airport,” Taliban official Amir Khan Mutaqi said. Meanwhile, an Afghan woman went into labour on a US Air Force flight and gave birth to a baby girl in the plane’s cargo bay moments after landing at a base in Germany. In a week not less than ten people lost their lives at the Airport here.
