Work on Dasu hydropower project to continue despite bus bombing tragedy

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister of Interior Sheikh Rashid Ahmed has informed the journalists at a Presser here on Sunday 18th of July that his ministry was hosting the fifteen Chinese investigators who visited Dasu on Saturday 17th of July. 

“They just said one thing that our stance and yours should be the same because Pakistan and China’s friendship is inexhaustible and taller than the Himalayas,” Sheikh Rashid stated.“The Chinese government fully thinks that we are fulfilling our responsibility more than our capability and has thanked us for Pakistan’s agencies, investigation and hospitality of the interior ministry,” he added.

Federal Minister said that no hindrance would be allowed in the way of CPEC and that Dasu hydropower project would continue. It has further been stated that Chinese companies were not showing any Pakistani employee the door.

It may be reaclled that rejecting the decision of M/s China Gezhouba Group Corporation (CGGC) regarding stopping their work here, higher authorities had proclaimed that the Chinese firm would keep on working on the Dasu hydropower project.

It is pertinent to mention here that following killing of nine workers by means of Bus Bomb, CGGC had announced to discontinue work on Dasu project and terminated the employment contract with the Pakistani staffers. Upper Kohistan District’s DC has confirmed that Envoy and other officials had decided not to stop work here. H. E. also assured that China would extend all possible cooperation to Pakistan.

Earlier, Chinese FM condemned the ‘bombing’: “The Chinese Embassy in Pakistan launched the emergency plan immediately, contacted the Pakistani military, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Interior and other relevant parties, and requested Pakistan to carry out rescue and treatment in the first place, and strengthen security protection for the Chinese citizens, institutions and projects in Pakistan, and investigate the incident thoroughly…

“The Chinese Embassy in Pakistan reminds Chinese citizens, enterprises, and projects in Pakistan to stay on alert, pay close attention to the local security situation, strengthen security protection, take strict precautions, and stop going out unless necessary.” According to the Chinese diplomatic mission in Islamabad: “At around 7 am on 14 July local time, a Chinese company’s shuttle bus carrying working staff on the Dasu Hydropower Project in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province was hit by blast on its way to the construction site.”

Information and Broadcasting Minister Fawad Chaudhry said that terrorism could not be ruled out from the (4,300-megawatt Dasu hydropower) bus tragedy in Kohistan, saying that: “Initial investigations into Dassu incident have now confirmed traces of explosives, Terrorism cannot be ruled out, PM is personally supervising all developments, in this regard Govt is in close coordination with Chinese embassy we are committed to fight menace of terrorism together.”

Babar Awan, Adviser to the PM on Parliamentary Affairs, while condemning the ‘assault’ on Chinese Engineers here on Wednesday (14th of July, 2021), held that it would not divert attention from the special initiatives between Pakistan and its neighbors. Speaking on the floor of the National Assembly Babar Awan stated that he would ask Interior Minister to brief the House about Pakistan’s state of affairs apropos security.
