MANHATTAN: United Nations pointed out on Friday (18th October, 2024) that 1.8 million Palestinians in Gaza were experiencing extremely critical levels of hunger.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said that he was alarmed by Integrated Phase Classification (IPC) findings that high displacement and restrictions on humanitarian aid flows meant that the people of Gaza were facing catastrophic levels of hunger.
Although so far United Nations or its Secretary General have badly failed to attract attention of anybody in the world, yet Guterres appealed the umpteenth time that crossing points must be opened immediately, bureaucratic impediments must be removed, and law and order must be restored enabling UN agencies deliver lifesaving humanitarian assistance.
World Food Programme (WFP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said that the risk of famine persisted across the whole Gaza Strip. Given the recent surge in hostilities, there are growing concerns that this worst-case scenario might materialise. It is pertinent to mention here that Israeli bombings have destroyed seventy percent of crops in Gaza.
