TORKHAM: The border crossing here, that remained closed for 25 days, has been reopened for trade and people (on foot) Wednesday (19th March, 2025).
Since Afghans agreed to dismantle the controversial structures that was the bone of contention, bilateral trade resumed and trucks carrying commodities commenced entering Afghanistan.
It is pertinent to mention here that Torkham Crossing happens to be the busiest frontier crossing between Afghanistan and Pakistan. It frequently remained shut during 2024 with skirmishes taking place between the security personnel of the two countries.
For instance, it remained closed to trade in the row over document rules for commercial vehicle drivers traversing the border. Due to that the voyage between two countries remained shut in recent months.
Later, Islamabad launched an operation targeting Afghans living in Pakistan sans papier and making document requirements for Afghans entering the neighboring country difficult. Kabul and Islamabad blamed each other for the shutdown at the Torkham Crossing
It may be recalled that Islamabad has been accusing the interim govt in Kabul of allowing militants use its soil to carry out attacks on Pakistan.
