KARACHI: There are some 20,000 men and over 200 women prisoners languishing in 25 prisons in Sindh. The population of jails includes 460 condemned men and two condemned women. 38 infants are also rotting behind bars for no crime of their own.
Central Prison Karachi that was constructed in 1899 for only 2400 inmates presently harbors 6253 prisoners.
Flaws in the jail structure surfaced recently when cells were flooded with water and prisoners had to spend nights standing in knee-deep water.
