K2: Two world-class Japanese climbers go missing

ISLAMABAD: Two Japanese (world-class) climbers, Kazuya Hirade and Kenro Nakajima (a mountain photographer) slipped and fell down from a height of 7000-7,500m, west of K2 on Saturday (27th July, 2024) morning while attempting to scale the 8,611 meters (world’s second-highest) peak.

Initially army aviation helicopters were utilized to rescue them but due to the angle of the slope at that height it was not possible to land. Nevertheless, their bodies were spotted. The men had no movement. Presently, many climbers and rescue workers are trying to reach the duo from the ground.

TIRICH MIR: It is pertinent to mention here that Kazuya Hiraide (left) and Kenro Nakajima had been bestowed with Piolet d’Or (golden ice axe), known as the Oscar of the mountaineering world.
