ISLAMABAD: IHC CJ Aamer Farooq and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb on Monday (3rd June, 2024), accepting the appeals of former PM Imran Khan and former FM Shah Mahmood Qureshi against their convictions in cipher case, acquitted them.
On 30th of January, 2024 the duo were sentenced to ten years in jail in the cipher case that was heard by Judge Abul Hasnat Zulqarnain of a special court formed under the Official Secrets Act.
It may be recalled that both IK and Qureshi refused to record their statements under section 342 saying that they would not do that in the absence of their advocates.
Since their lawyers perpetually failed to appear during the hearings, court provided state defense counsel.
Judge Abul Hasnat Zulqarnain had verbally announced the verdict in Adiala jail in the presence of the accused a few days before the General Polls held on 8th of February, 2024.
PTI lawyers, when contacted by NPTV, said that provided they received the copy of the order the same day, they would appeal in the High Court seeking the cancellation of the punishment.
