DHAKA: Bewildered by the persisting labour unrest, factory owners all over the Bangladesh had decided to shut down their production units from Sunday (15th September, 2024) under No Work No Pay policy.
Industries Adviser, warned that those trying to shut down factories to destabilise Bangladesh’s economy, would be handled with iron hands. Assuring of ample security to the production units, he proclaimed that all garment factories would commence production from Sunday (15th September, 2024).
Agitating garment industry workers demanding back wages set a chemical warehouse on fire Wednesday (11th September, 2024) and prevented fire tenders from dousing the blaze. They looted the plant too. Incidentally the owner of the factory, an Awami League MNA, is in custody following fleeing of Hasina Sheikh.
183 garment factories have stopped operations that would translate into considerable losses for the country that earns foreign exchange exporting ready-made garments. Thousands of production units engaged in manufacturing ready made garments for brands including Levi’s, Zara and H&M account for 85 percent of the country’s US $55 billion in annual exports.
