ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan has approved an extension in the term of Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa for another three years. He was appointed COAS by deposed PM Nawaz Sharif in November 2016.
This decision has been taken in view of the current geo-political situation (particularly in IoK and Afghanistan) and to support the ongoing efforts for sustained peace in the region.
Commenting on this decision, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi held: “A very clear message … that Pakistan’s political and military leadership are not only ready, they are on one page.”
Notification, personally signed by the Prime Minister Imran Khan, says: “General Qamar Javed Bajwa is appointed Chief of Army Staff for another term of three years from the date of completion of current tenure. The decision has been taken in view of the regional security environment.”
Qamar Javed Bajwa, who was born on 11th November, 1996 in Gujranwala was commissioned in 1980 in the Baloch Regiment at the age of 20. He studied at Canadian Forces Command and Staff College in Toronto, Naval Post Graduate University in California and Islamabad’s National Defense University.
