Flour Crisis: Minister claims there is no shortfall in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Minister for National Food Security & Research, Khusro Bakhtiar has claimed that four million tonnes of wheat was available in the public sector and there is no shortfall of wheat in the country.

According to the Minister Federal Government had evolved a mechanism with the coordination of provincial governments to end ‘artificial shortfall’ of wheat in some parts of the country.

Minister further claimed that  flour prices per kg in Sindh was brought down from 60 to 54 rupees while in KP it was available for Rs. 52 per kg. Minister told that government had raised the minimum support price of wheat from 1300 to 1365 rupees per 40 kg.

Those who voted for a change were not expecting free-falling depreciation of rupee and the monster of inflation and mismanagement forcing them to line-up to buy flour that too at an exorbitant price.

It is pertinent to mention here that the concerned authorities remained silent for months with no inclination to take steps to protect the consumers from the augmenting prices of flour cost of the staple food. When the ostriches were informed about the imminent shortages in major cities they did not take the heads out of the sand.

They got shocked only when the masses of the country started shouting for food.  The so-called leaders are busy blaming each other and thus passing the buck, while people are forced to feed lesser to their children.

Sindh says since it was not given money by the central government it could not procure wheat, Punjab did not take any action against the hoarders. Federal government that was foolish enough to allow exports of wheat despite poor crop is now allowing its imports.

Then what our so-called LEAs were doing when four was being smuggled out of the country. Hence it is due to bad management skills of incumbent government that the poor is suffering from the pangs of hunger.
