France, Sébastien Lecornu is the new PM

PARIS: President Emmanuel Macron has appointed Sébastien Lecornu as the new Premier here on Tuesday (9th Sept, 2025) expecting that the former defence minister would be able to garner consensus in the parliament, facilitating the passing of 2026 budget.

74-year-old François Bayrou, lost vote-of-confidence (364/194), thus was ousted as French PM (after a 9-month tenure). He handed over his resignation on the morning of 9th Sept to his centrist ally Emmanuel Macron (who has appointed his 3rd premier in one year and 5th since he commenced his second term in 2022.

According to details when the parliamentarians were about to show him the door, François Bayrou said: “You have the power to bring down the government, but you do not have the power to erase the reality…reality will remain relentless: expenses will continue to rise, and the burden of debt, already unbearable, will grow heavier and more costly.”
