IFJ 100 years of international solidarity

IFJ Centenary World Congress 4-7 May

Crime Europe

PARIS: Hundreds of delegates from Pakistan and all over the world will converge here on 4th of May, 2026 to attend 4-day Centenary World Congress of International Federation of Journalists (IFJ).

IFJ 100 years of solidarity

And why Paris? IFJ President Dominique Pradalié deciphered: “We have returned to Paris, the birthplace of the IFJ, marking a century of solidarity and trade union struggles for press freedom, quality journalism, and fair working conditions for all our members. This congress promises to be a powerful gathering, and we hope our delegates leave inspired—with renewed strength, hope, and unity.”

Dominique Pradalié, who has been IFJ President since 2022, is preparing to hand over to her successor. Pradalié looks back on four years full of courage and solidarity: from the Council of Europe’s recognition of Julian Assange as a political prisoner to the 1,860 Mauritanian journalists whose contracts have been regularised to the emotional live broadcast with journalists in Gaza.

IFJ 100 years of International Solidarity

Congress under the banner of ‘100 years of international solidarity for strong journalism and trade unionism’ will commence commemorating the World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) which serves as an important reminder of the importance of a free, independent media in upholding democracy.

Back to back with the WPFD, Centenary Congress of IFJ is scheduled to be held at Novotel Paris Est, Porte de Bagnolet, 2026. It will be preceded by an event at the Théâtre de la Concorde.

PARIS: The IFJ Centenary Congress will be held at the Novotel Paris Est Conference Center.

__________

Marking its 100th anniversary, the congress will reflect on the continued commitment of IFJ to social justice, decent working conditions, and freedom of expression for media workers, electing a new executive committee and deciding the Federation’s strategic direction for 2026 to 2029 for its 188 affiliated journalist unions speaking on behalf of 600,000 members.

The IFJ has also invited numerous international guests, including representatives from several United Nations agencies, including UNESCO and the International Labour Organisation (ILO), as well as the secretaries-general of global trade union confederations, long-standing partners, and friends of the Federation.

The Congress agenda includes pertinent discussions on issues of artificial intelligence, climate change, media safety, youth engagement, gender equality, surveillance, and more, all anchored in the IFJ’s core values of solidarity, trade unionism, and press freedom.

Mine Awareness Day Press Freedom Day

On the Press Freedom Day (3rd May, 2026) António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, stated:

“People often say that in war, truth is the first casualty. But far too frequently, the first casualties are the journalists who risk everything to report that truth – not only in war, but wherever those in power fear scrutiny. Across the globe, media workers risk censorship, surveillance, legal harassment – and even death. Recent years have seen a sharp rise in the number of journalists killed – often deliberately targeted – in war zones.

“Eighty-five percent of the crimes committed against journalists go uninvestigated and unpunished: an unacceptable level of impunity. Economic pressures, new technologies, and active manipulation are also putting press freedom under unprecedented strain. When access to reliable information erodes, mistrust takes root. When public debate is distorted, social cohesion weakens.

“And when journalism is undermined, crises become far more difficult to prevent and resolve. All freedom depends on press freedom. Without it, there can be no human rights, no sustainable development – and no peace. On this World Press Freedom Day, let us protect the rights of journalists, and build a world where the truth – and truth-tellers – are safe.”
