LONDON: Jemina Goldsmith, commenting on the racist anti-Pakistan discourse in UK, took to the X (Twitter) to hold that sexual abuse in the UK sadly spans all communities, socio-economic backgrounds, races and faiths.

The Catholic Church in England and Wales (1970-2015): 3000 instances of child sexual abuse, 936 alleged paedophiles, 133 convictions, 52 priests defrocked. Since 2016, there have been more than 100 reported sexual abuse allegations each year. UK boarding schools (2012-2018): Thousands of alleged victims over decades; 425 accused paedophiles, 160 charged since 2012 alone. 171 of these allegations pertained to historical abuse of children, at least 125 involved in recent incidents.

UK Asian grooming gangs (1997-2013): At least 1,400 victims, 60 rapists, convicted so far. (NB: The exact number of victims for all the above is unclear, as cases so often go unreported for years. And there have been multiple failures to prosecute perpetrators& protect victims). The common thread here is men,) often from closed, hierarchical, gender-segregated communities), abusing their power.”

Earlier the FO Spox, Shafqat Ali Khan, while responding, on Monday (13th Jan), to racist remarks by many, including Musk, held: “To demonise such a large and diverse community on the basis of the actions of a few individuals needs to be condemned.

“…we note with deep concern the increasingly racist and Islamophobic political and media commentary in the UK that is aimed at conflating the reprehensible actions of a few individuals with the entire 1.7 million British Pakistani diaspora…That provides the strongest link between the two friendly countries…

British Pakistanis today form the backbone of the UK’s health, retail and services sectors…Many British Pakistanis hold high public office, and thousands serve their communities as Members of Parliament, mayors, councillors, and as members of local police and municipal services.”
