ANKARA: The eighteen-year-old model & university student  Itir Esen (who was crowned Miss Turkey on Thursday 21st of September) was dethroned yesterday when the jury proclaimed that her past tweet (since been erased) about July 2016 coup attempt was unacceptable.

Can Sandikcioglu, who heads the Miss Turkey Organization, stated on behalf of the Committee: “We are sad to announce that we have reached the conclusion that the tweet was posted by Itir Esen. It is not possible for the Miss Turkey”.

In her email statement about the  attempted coup – during which 250 people died combating an army rebellion –  Itir Esen compared the spilt blood of ‘martyrs’ with her menstrual cycle: “I am having my period this morning to celebrate the July 15 martyrs’ day. I am celebrating the day by bleeding a representation of our martyrs’ blood”, she wrote.

It is pertinent to mention here that since the failed coup attempt President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has repeatedly termed those who died resisting the revolt as ‘martyrs’.

However, Itir Esen in her rejoinder took to Instagram pleading that she was apolitical while texting the message and she was being misunderstood: “I want to say that as a 18-year-old girl, I had no political aims while sharing this post…I was raised with respect for the homeland and the nation”.

Itir Esen, who has been stripped of Miss Turkey 2017 crown for insulting comments posted in social media against those who were killed in the last year’s failed coup. Runner-up Asli Sumen, who will be representing Turkey in the Miss World competition scheduled to be hosted by New Silk Road Group early November this year  in China.

Newspakistan.tv viewers will be surprised to learn that when last year Turkish president launched thousands of lawsuits against people he believed offended him, the 2016 winner of Miss Turkey title, Merve Buyuksarac, was given a 14-month suspended prison sentence for criticizing him in social media by means of a satirical poem. She was also arrested for a short time in 2015 over the issue.
