PPP Opposes Punjab Agriculture Income Tax Bill

LAHORE: PPP leaders, claimed that PML-N’s Provincial Govt did not consult them on the Agricultural Income Tax Bill, tabled and passed on Thursday (14th Nov, 2024) in order to implement the IMF agenda.

IMF in its unscheduled visit this week had noted: “With an export basket strongly biased towards agriculture and textiles (cotton yarn, rice, woven fabrics, beef, leather apparel), the country has struggled to reallocate resources towards more technologically complex products.”

PPP parliamentary leader in provincial assembly Ali Haider maintained, since government had not taken his Party onboard about the key bill, PPP had not only decided to oppose its passage but also to walkout of the session to register their protest.

It is pertinent to mention here that most of the MNAs and MPAs are landlords, their wealth as well as political strength comes from enormous tracts of terrain they cultivate their crops on. Many have spiritual influence on the sharecroppers as they claim to be the decedents of some ancient saint. Having a mausoleum on the land is also normal.

Though Punjab had taken the lead and a passed the Agricultural Income Tax (Amendment) Bill 2024, despite a walkout by PPP and PTI who claim their proposed amendments were not pondered over, it is bound to find resistance before officially becoming a law. PPP-backed governor will send it back to the assembly with an advice to revisit the bill.
