Muslim envoys join hands with Pakistan government against blasphemy on social media

ISLAMABAD: In a meeting here on Friday, ambassadors from Muslim countries decided to join hands against blasphemous content on social media and to protect the sanctity and dignity of Islam.

Interior Minister of Pakistan, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan chaired the meeting which was attended by ambassadors of Muslim countries.

According to an interior ministry official, participants of the meeting discussed one point agenda regarding blasphemous content on social media.

A course of action to effectively raise the voice of the Muslim world on the issue was also discussed.

“During the meeting, a course of action to effectively raise the voice of the Muslim world on the issue was also discussed and it was decided that a comprehensive strategy paper encompassing all legal and technical aspects would be circulated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs among the ambassadors of the Muslim countries,” the official, who was not authorised to prove his identity, said.

“A formal reference would also be sent to the secretary-general of the Arab League and the secretary general of the Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC),” he added.

The official went on to add that the matter will also be brought to the attention of the United Nations.

The interior minister told the meeting that all legal options would be brought to the table to bring the matter to the courts of countries from where the content is generated.

“Islamic ummah must strive together to impress upon the international community to shed off Islamophobia,” he said, adding that no law permits showing disrespect or distortion of any religion.
