Panchayat and Vani are still there in Pak lexis

By Aiman Inam

RAHIMYAR KHAN: The advent of 2016 has little impact on the mindset of many Pakistanis. Today (Friday) police raided and stopped marriage of a 10-year-old girl to a 14-year-old boy here.

Coming from marginal Hindu community the girl was forced to marry at this tender age. Panchayat constituted of local seniors had ordered Vani (hands of girl given) to stop clash amid two families. Girl’s (now imprisoned) brother was accused of killing his wife.

Though forbidden Vani is rampantly practiced to settle disputes in Pakistan.
