LAHORE: PTI’s Chief Minister-elect Sardar Usman Ahmad Khan Buzdar today said eradication of corruption and getting rid of status quo were his priorities as the chief executive of the province.
Prime Minister Imran Ahmed Khan Niazi congratulated Sardar Usman Ahmed Khan Buzdar on his election as the Chief Minister of Punjab. The prime minister telephoned the newly elected Punjab chief minister and extended greetings to him. He also felicitated the parliamentary party of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and allies, said a PM Office statement. The election of Sardar Usman Buzdar has heralded the onset of a new era in Punjab, the prime minister remarked.
It is pertinent to mention here that by defeating his opponent Hamza Shehbaz s/o Shehbaz Sharif former CM of Punjab by 27 votes (186:159) CM-Elect Buzdar has ended the decade-long dominance of Takht-e-Lahore.
Sardar Usman Khan Buzdar, who is the second chief minister of Punjab from DG Khan and fifth from South Punjab, would be sworn in on Aug 20. Ghulam Mustafa Khar hailed from Muzaffargarh. He was the first CM from south Punjab, who served from 12th November 1973 to 15th March 1974. Nawab Sadiq Hussain Qureshi belonged to Multan and he was the second CM who served from 15th July 1975 to 5th July 1977. Ghulam Haider Wyne hailed from Mian Channu, district Khanewal, and he was elected as CM Punjab from Aug 6, 1990, to April 25, 1993. Sardar Dost Muhammad Khosa was the fourth CM Punjab from the south, who remained in the office from 11th April 2008 to 8th June 2008.
Speaking in the Punjab Assembly after his election as Leader of the House, he resolved to make Punjab a model province through good governance and overcoming the challenges being faced by its people.
Spelling out his priorities as the Punjab chief minister, he said the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government would strengthen institutions, including the local government system.
He said he would follow the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) governance, model. The PTI government in that province had achieved successes during its 2013-18 tenure and that was why the KP people voted the PTI to power with a two-thirds majority in the 2018 general election, he added.
The CM-elect said police reforms would also be introduced in the province. The work for improving the lot of people across the province would be a priority, as there were many areas, including his home constituency Taunsa Sharif, were underdeveloped. The PTI government would bring the under-developed areas at par with the developed ones while maintaining the pace of development works in the latter, he added.
Buzdar said the provincial assembly members would be empowered and they would powerful in their constituencies like that of a chief minister.
Justifying his election as Punjab chief minister, he said he was aware of the deprivations of the poor and backward areas as he himself hailed from such an area.
“I hail from the most backward area of the province, and my hometown even does not have electricity,” he added.
The chief minister-elect said PTI Chairman Imran Khan had promised to end deprivations of South Punjab in his election manifesto and he had delivered on that promise by his nomination as the chief minister.
He expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Imran Khan for providing him an opportunity to serve as the chief minister of the largest province of the country. He thanked the members of his party and the allies. He also thanked the opposition for being part of the democratic process of election of the chief minister.

Addressing the House, the losing candidate for the chief minister Hamza Shehbaz of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz called for constitution of a parliamentary commission to probe alleged rigging of the July 25 general election. He talked about the sacrifices made by his family for the cause of democracy and the achievements of previous PML-N governments.
One-member Rah-e-Haq party leader Maulana Muaviya Tariq congratulated Sardar Usman Khan Buzdar on his election as the chief minister, urging him to serve masses without any discrimination.
Pakistan Peoples Party’s parliamentary leader Syed Ali Gilani termed his presence in the assembly a victory of democracy. He was kidnapped two days before the 2013 general election from Multan during his election campaign, he recalled.
Gilani said the PPP would support the PTI-led coalition government in Punjab for the cause of south Punjab province.
iii) Selection of Sardar Usman Khan Buzdar as the Punjab chief minister by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf
Chairman Imran Khan widely hailed throughout South Punjab. Soon after the announcement, the people of Barthi, an under-developed tribal area of tahsil Taunsa Sharif, started exchanging greetings and distributing sweets. Usman Buzdar is the eldest son of the chief of Buzdar tribe Sardar Fateh Muhammad Khan Buzdar. He started his political career in 1997 when he was elected as a member district council, Dera Ghazi Khan. His father Sardar Fateh Muhammad Khan Buzdar was elected as an MPA thrice from 1985 to 2007. Usman Buzdar was elected twice as Tehsil Nazim tribal area in 2002 and 2005. He got his primary education from Primary School in Barthi, his native tribal area, and did his matriculation from High School Taunsa Sharif. He did his FA and BA from Emerson College Multan. Usman Buzdar completed his law education (LLB) and Masters in Political Science from Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan. He lost the 2013 general election as a nominee of Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) to Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) candidate, Khawaja Nazimul Mahmood. However, he staged a comeback as a PTI candidate in 2018 polls, defeating Khawaja Nazimul Mahmood. He got 26,897 votes, while independent Khawaja Nazimul Mahmood, his rival, remained the second with 18,668 votes. Usman Buzdar has four brothers and five sisters. With the announcement of his election as the Punjab CM triggered a wave of happiness throughout DG Khan and Taunsa and scores of people gathered outside his residence in Barthi and celebrated his victory.
