MOSCOW: Sans admitting that Azerbaijan Airlines passenger plane crashed (killing 38) due to Russian Air Defense System (meant to contain Ukrainian drones) President Vladimir Putin apologised to President Ilham Heydar Oghlu Aliyev here on Saturday (28th Dec, 2024) for the ‘tragic accident’.
Kremlin stated: “(President) Vladimir Putin apologised for the tragic incident that occurred in Russian airspace and once again expressed his deep and sincere condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.”
It may be recalled that Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer passenger plane, harbouring 62 passengers and five crew, crashed near the Kazakhstan city Aktau on Wednesday (25th Dec 2024).
According to details, the plane was travelling from the Azerbaijani capital Baku to Grozny (in the Russian region of Chechnya). Following strike by Air Defense System the flight J2-8243 flew hundreds of miles off its route, 3 km from Aktau, and hit the ground before bursting into flames.
Since a portion of the fuselage remained intact, those travelling in this part of plane, including two children, survived and presently are being provided medical aid. Sources informed that 11 rescued voyagers are in critical condition.
Deciphering the information extracted from the two Black Boxes, officials on Thursday (26th Dec, 2024) have proclaimed that the Russian Pantsir-S Missile System had caused the Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer-190 crash a day earlier.
It transpired from the investigation that as soon as the aircraft approached Grozny the (Electronic Warfare) Pantsir-S Missile System jammed its communication due to which it disappeared from the radars. Earlier, it was insinuated that the aircraft crashed due to bird strike.
