Shangla Suicide Attack Claims Lives of 5 Chinese Nationals

SHANGLA: Hours after the attack on PNS Base in Turbat on Monday/Tuesday (25th/26th March, 2024), unidentified suicide-bombers rammed their explosives-laden vehicle in Besham area at 1pm Tuesday (26th March, 2024) here into a convoy of vehicles harboring engineers going from Islamabad to their camp in Dasu killing 5 (four male and one female) Chinese nationals and their Pakistani driver.

Taking to the X (Twitter) PM Shehbaz Sharif stated: “I visited Chinese Embassy today to express my condolences at the dastardly act of terrorism in which five Chinese and a Pakistani national were killed. Our sympathies and prayers are with the victims and their families. I strongly condemn this attack against Pak-China friendship. Our two countries express firm resolve to bring the perpetrators of this heinous act to justice”.

ISLAMABAD: PM Shehbaz Sharif visited the Chinese Embassy to offer condolence over the death of Chinese nationals with Ambassador Jiang Zaidong.

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Interior, Mohsin Naqvi called on the Chinese Envoy Jiang Zaidong to offer condolences over the death of Chinese nationals. As Beijing has demanded a through probe into the attack, the diplomatic mission in Islamabad stated: “The Chinese embassy and consulates in Pakistan have immediately launched emergency work, demanding that the Pakistani side conduct a thorough investigation into the attack, severely punish the perpetrators and take practical and effective measures to protect the safety of Chinese citizens.”

ISPR stated: “Strategic projects and sensitive sites vital for Pakistan’s economic progress and the well-being of its people are being targeted as a conscious effort to retard our progress and sow discord between Pakistan and its strategic allies and partners, most notably China…

“Certain foreign elements are complicit in aiding and abetting terrorism in Pakistan, driven by their vested interests. Despite the veneer of innocence, these elements are being continuously exposed as sponsors of terror…

“Pakistan, as the front-line state against terror, remains perhaps the only nation directly confronting the international terrorist enterprise with absolute steadfastness and full resolve of the state…

“With the unwavering support of the resilient nation and our iron-clad ally China, we will ensure that all those involved in aiding terrorism, directly or indirectly, are held accountable and find their due comeuppance. Together we will prevail over adversity and evil.”

It may be recalled that Dasu, site of a 4,300-megawatt hydroelectric dam in Kohistan being constructed by the China Gezhouba Group Company, has also been attacked in the past.

FO stated: “The government of Pakistan strongly condemns this heinous act of terrorism. We will take all necessary measures to bring the terrorists and their facilitators to justice. Such dastardly acts cannot dent the resolve of Pakistani nation to fight against the scourge of terrorism”.

In July 2021 thirteen people, including nine Chinese citoyens, lost their lives when the coach they were travelling in to the under-construction tunnel site of Dasu Dam, fell into a ravine in Upper Kohistan due to a bomb attack.

APP Adds: The Chinese Embassy and Consulates General in Pakistan on Tuesday (26th March, 2024) strongly condemned the heinous terrorist attack targeting a Chinese company bus.

Expressing profound sorrow for the victims and extending heartfelt sympathy to the affected families, the embassy affirmed its commitment to working closely with Pakistani authorities to manage the aftermath of the tragic incident.

Meanwhile, The Chinese Embassy and Consulates General in Pakistan are taking all necessary measures to protect the safety of Chinese citizens, institutions and projects in Pakistan, and to ensure such incidents will not happen again.

The Chinese Embassy and Consulates General in Pakistan remind Chinese citizens, enterprises in Pakistan to pay close attention to the security situation, enhance security alerts, strengthen security measures, and make every effort to take safety precautions.

APP Adds: Minister for Interior and Narcotic Control, Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi on Tuesday reached the Chinese embassy in Islamabad immediately after the suicide attack on the car of Chinese citizens in Shangla and briefed the Chinese Ambassador about the details of blast and ongoing rescue operations.

In a condemnation statement issued by his office, the minister expressed heartfelt grief and sorrow, condolence to the families of the deceased Chinese citizens, the attack on the fraternal relations between Pakistan and China is intolerable.

Naqvi said the whole Pakistani nation was an equal participant in the grief of its Chinese brothers, adding that the government would deal with the elements involved in the attack with iron hands by ensuring a comprehensive investigation of the incident.

He said the great bilateral relations would not be affected due to such attacks, expressed the complete solidarity with the families of the deceased Chinese citizens.

Mohsin Naqvi said the enemy had targeted the citizens of Pakistan’s most trusted friend country (China). He reiterated resolve that the enemy would be given a strapping response to the attack.

US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller stated: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and injuries sustained, and share our heartfelt condolences with those affected by the attack…

“The Pakistani people have suffered greatly at the hands of terrorists, and I’ll note that PRC nationals in Pakistan have also been the victims of terrorist attacks, and no country should suffer the acts of terror.”
