Syrian troops to contain Turkish attacks following an agreement with Kurds

DAMASCUS: In order to confront, what  Syria terms Turkish aggression, troops have been dispatched to the North of the country.

According to details Kurdish leadership was in contact with Damascus discussing all the options available to counter Turkish attacks.  Yesterday (Sunday 13th of October, 2019) Kurds announced a groundbreaking deal with Damascus on a Syrian troop deployment near the border with Turkey.

Kurdish administration in a statement revealed: “In order to prevent and confront this aggression, an agreement has been reached with the Syrian government… so that the Syrian army can deploy along the Syrian-Turkish border to assist the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).” Moreover, SDF chief Mazlum Abdi wrote in a piece published in a foreign journal: “If we have to choose between compromises and the genocide of our people, we will surely choose life for our people.”

Meanwhile Ankara resorted to press a deadly cross-border offensive that resulted into criticism from across the globe. Turkish assault (including air strikes, shelling as well as ground incursion (that commenced last Wednesday) reportedly by Syrian proxy fighters, has killed many civilians as well as combatants.

According to sources more than 60 civilians have now died on the Syrian side of the border. Ankara reported eighteen civilians died from Kurdish shelling inside Turkey. Moreover, it has been reported that the pro-Ankara fighters have executed more than nine civilians yesterday (13th of October, 2019) near the Syrian town of Tal Abyad.

It is pertinent to mention here that since Defense Secretary Mark Esper announced that USA was withdrawing  1,000 US troops as Turkey was pressing further into Syria than had been expected, Kurds feel they have been betrayed the way Mujaheddin were used against USSR in Afghanistan.  Kurds, who  were ally in the fight against Daesh, had been left alone by US in the battle against Turkish forces.
