ISLAMABAD: President has signed Peca amendment bill here on Wednesday (29th Jan, 2025).
The Peca Amendment Bill had been passed by the Senate on 28th January. The bill seeks to penalises anyone who propagates fake news. Such person could be incarcerated for three years or up to fined twenty lakh rupees or both.
Following approvals from the lower and upper houses and the President’s assent the Peca Amendment Bill will appear in the Gazette and will become a law.
The way journalists walked out from the Press gallery of senate, they shunned the NA Press gallery last week when the bill was tabled.
Meanwhile, Media organisations, civil society members and lawyers, all over the country, took to the streets to protest against the passage of the bill calling it a draconian law.
