27 die in deadly road crash in Rahim Yar Khan




RAHIM YAR KHAN: At least 27 people were killed and dozens injured when two passenger buses collided in Rahim Yar Khan district of Punjab on Monday.

According to details, the ill-fated buses rammed with each other in a head-on crash near Sahja, a small village in the Khanpur town of Rahim Yar Khan, leaving 20 people dead on the spot while seven others succumbed to their injuries while being carried to the hospital.

“At least 27 people have been killed in the accident and 50 others were wounded,” local government official Zafar Iqbal said, adding that around 72 persons were injured in the accident, scores of them in a precarious condition.

Rescue workers were attempting to pull people out of the wreckage, with fears that the death toll could rise, Iqbal said.

The dead bodies have been transferred to nearby hospitals, rescue sources said. The hospitals in the area have declared an emergency to attend a large number of injured, some of them have been in critical condition, sources further said.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif expressed deep grief and sorrow over the loss of precious lives in Rahim Yar Khan accident.

According to a PM House statement, PM Sharif prayed for eternal peace of the departed souls and grant of courage to the bereaved families to bear this irreparable loss.

“Prime Minister has directed the concerned authorities to extend best medical treatment for the injured and save valuable lives,” read the statement.
