Junk food can permanently damage kidneys

AIMAN INAM

LONDON: Apart from increasing depression, consuming fast food on a regular basis can cause enduring harm to the kidneys and trigger diabetes, says a latest study.

Senior research author from Anglia Ruskin University in Britain, Havovi Chichger noted: “The western diet has more and more processed junk food and fat and there is a well-established link between excessive consumption of this food and recent increases in the prevalence of obesity and Type 2 diabetes.”

Chichger further added in a paper published in the journal Experimental Physiology: “In our study, both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes induce changes in glucose transport in the kidney. But junk food or a diet high in fat causes changes that are very similar to those found in Type 2 diabetes.”

Scientists used animal sculpts to discover the insulin, excessive sugar or fat affects on glucose transporters in the kidney.

A number of rats have been fed a diet consisting of cheese, chocolate, biscuits and marshmallows for eight weeks including a diet high in fat (60%) of rodent foodstuff for five weeks.

The findings exposed that junk food and high fat diet triggered the risk of having Type 2 diabetes, therefore affecting kidneys. Authors held: “Finding a way to block glucose re-absorption in the kidneys could offer a potential treatment for lowering blood sugar levels.”
