Ahsan Iqbal Arrested by NAB in Narowal Sports Complex Case

ISLAMABAD: NAB has arrested PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal here today in Narowal Sports Complex Corruption Case.

He is scheduled to be produced before an Accountability Court for physical remand tomorrow (Tuesday 24th of December, 2019). His medical examination will be carried out today. It is pertinent to mention here that NAB Rawalpindi chapter had summoned him today in Narowal Sports Complex Case.

It may be recalled that in the month of July, 2019 NAB had commenced probe in Narowal Sports Complex case that had been built with Rs. 3000 million.  The project was developed during Ahsan Iqbal’s tenure as minister planning. The NAB investigation team also visited the Narowal Sports City project last month in order to acquire record.

Reacting to the development PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb stated that Ahsan Iqbal had a surgery just 3 days ago related to the last year’s assassination attempt. His bone was fractured after he received a bullet in his right shoulder.

Pointing out that Ahsan Iqbal never commissioned the Narowal project as it was launched in the PPP-P era, she stated that Ahsan Iqbal only revived the dormant project. Alleging that the incumbent government was using NAB to target opposition,  she said that PML-N would continue calling the incompetence of PTI-government.

LHC adjourns contempt plea against Ahsan Iqbal till 5th of Sept

LAHORE: A Lahore High Court full bench on Monday adjourned the hearing of a contempt plea against former interior minister Ahsan Iqbal till September 5.

The three-member bench headed by Justice Syed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi heard the petition filed by Munir Ahmad against Ahsan Iqbal over his anti-judiciary remarks. At the outset of the hearing, Ahsan Iqbal along with his counsel appeared before the bench and submitted a detailed reply in the case. He also maintained that he respected the judiciary. Iqbal’s lawyer submitted that his client had tendered an unconditional apology in relation to the contempt of court proceedings against him. He pleaded to dispose of the proceedings.

However, the bench did not agree with the request and observed that it would review the matter after summer vacation. The bench then adjourned hearing till September 5. The civil miscellaneous application was filed by Munir Ahmad in a pending petition against anti-judiciary speeches by former prime minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and 16 other leaders of Pakistan Muslim League-N.

The petitioner submitted that Ahsan Iqbal, then interior minister, and former prime minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif had used derogatory remarks against the Supreme Court judges on April 25 and 23 respectively, which were aired on TV channels.

He contended that the respondents’ action was barred under Article 68 of the Constitution but the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) did not take any action despite being empowered by the PEMRA Ordinance.

Meanwhile, on Monday he said there was no need for the PML-N to launch the election campaign on a massive scale as it would win the general election on the basis of its last government’s performance. The PML-N government had launched many mega developmental projects, including China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), during its government, he said talking to a private news channel.

Ahsan alleged that the PML-N leaders were being targeted and attempts were being made to make the election controversial. His party would, however, not boycott the election and leave the field vacant for others. The PML-N government had checked terrorist activities, reduced energy shortfall and launched several welfare projects across the country, he claimed.

He said nobody could remove love of the PML-N and its leadership from the people’s hearts, who would decide on July 25 that who would rule the country. Ahsan Iqbal alleged that Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan, who had failed to deliver Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during his party’s government in last five years, claimed to bring a change across the country.

The assailant is being interrogated while CM  Punjab has ordered the IGP to submit a detailed report  of the incident immediately. Accused Abid in his confessional statement has reportedly said that he had shot at the Minister because of the issue of khatm-e-Nabuwwat (finality of prophet-hood). Attacker further said that was his personal decision and he was not influenced or ordered by any handler.

CM has also dispatched a helicopter to move the injured minister to Lahore. However, sources privy to Newspakistan.tv his condition is out of danger.

It is pertinent to mention here that LEA’s had issued a warning apropos possible attack at the corner meeting  on 1st of May advising Ahsan Iqbal to avoid the Narowal trip. Cynics go haywire pointing at the recent court order regarding withdrawal of security.
