BBC’s Bajwa-Sacking Story Baseless: ISPR

ISLAMABAD: ISPR has rejected the BBC Urdu story as baseless saying that the helicopter that landed at PM house on the evening of 9th April, 2022 harbored  COAS Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa; the COAS last met the then pm Imran Khan earlier at NSC meeting.

ISPR has refuted BBC Urdu’s 10th of April (2022) piece titled What happened at the Prime Minister’s House on Saturday night? terming it baseless and a pack of lies. ISPR stated that the typical propaganda story lacked any credible, authentic and relevant source and violated basic journalistic ethos: “There is no truth in the fake story whatsoever and clearly seems part of an organised disinformation campaign. The matter is being taken up with BBC authorities.”

The statement further maintained that the published story seemed part of an organised disinformation campaign and the matter was being taken up with BBC authorities.  Rejecting the contents of the story ISPR pointed out that COAS did not land at the Prime Minister House in the evening of Saturday 9th of April, 2022 for a rendezvous with the then PM Imran Khan, who the story claimed attempted to sack the Army Chief while a No-Confidence Motion against the the then PM was about to be voted.

The BBC Urdu piece quoting government sources stated that two uninvited guests landed at the PM House by means of a helicopter and held a 45-minute long unpleasant private meeting with Imran Khan (the then prime minister) who, the story claimed, had given orders to remove one of the senior officials present at the rendezvous.

BBC Urdu story claimed that the then pm Imran Khan was expecting the newly appointed officials. The story alleged that the de-notification and the notification apropos new appointment were not issued by the Defence Ministry. BBC Urdu story claimed that IHC was opened to take-up a petition pleading the court to restrain the then pm from de-notifying COAS.

“It is important to mention that while the petition was prepared, the space for the number of the notification regarding the army chief’s dismissal was left blank. The reason for this was that despite the prime minister’s request, the notification could not be issued and there was no need for a hearing.”

It is pertinent to mention here that Newspakistan has reported on the evening of 9th of April, 2022 that a petition was filed (by Advocate Adnan Iqbal under Article 199 of the Constitution)  as a preemptive measure to restrain the then pm from using his arbitrary power in order to recommend the army chief’s approval before the expiry of his term for personal and political motive.

Federation of Pakistan, Government of Pakistan, (the then) Prime Minister Imran Khan, President Dr Arif Alvi, Ministry of Law and the secretary of the Ministry of Defence were quoted as respondents. The fact that while hearing a suo moto notice apropos NA dissolution SCP had directed that any order passed by the prime minister or president would be subject to the order of the SCP.
