Would-be-blockbuster, Top Gun Maverick has become the latest victim of COVID-19. Paramount Pictures has announced yesterday (2nd of March, 2020) that the sequel to the 1986 original will now open on 23rd of December instead of 24th of June, 2020.
Tom Cruise took to the Twitter to state: “I know many of you have waited 34 years. Unfortunately, it will be a little longer. Top Gun: Maverick will fly this December. Stay safe, everyone.”
It is pertinent to mention here that typically summer is Hollywood’s most profitable time of year, when the studios release many sequels, superhero films and action movies. For instance, in 2019 summer ticket sales accounted for $4.3 billion in American and Canadian cinemas.
Furthermore, one may note that Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Wonder Woman 1984, Black Widow, Morbius and In the Heights No Time to Die and Mulan have all been delayed or taken off the schedule.
A Quiet Place Part II, which had been scheduled to be released in the month of March, will now be released on 4th day of September, 2020. The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run will hit the cinemas on 31st of July for July instead of 22nd day of May, 2020.
