Cricket, 2nd Test, 4th Day: SA beats Pakistan by 10 wickets

NEWLANDS CRICKET GROUND (CAPE TOWN): Proteas chasing down 58 run target, defeated the Green Shirts here on Monday (6th Jan, 2025) by ten wickets to win the two match test series.

Meanwhile, Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, fined Pakistan 25 percent of their match fee and penalised 5 ICC World Test Championship points for maintaining a slow over-rate against Proteas. Green shirts were five overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

South Africa won by 10 wickets:

Proteas: 1st innings 615 (Rickelton 259) & 58-0 (Bedingham 44 not out).

Green Shirts: 194 (Babar Azam scored 58 runs) & 478 (Masood chipped in 145 runs).

Green Shirts, that was forced to follow-on by the hosts, resumed the second innings on 4th day and avoided innings defeat and scored 478 runs, thanks to the 145 chipped in by Skipper Shan Masood, 81 by Babar Azam and 41 runs by Mohammad Rizwan.

Green Shirts, that scored 64 for three in the second innings on 2nd day, resumed on Sunday (5th Jan, 2025) here, but was forced to follow on against South Africa when the whole equipe went back to pavilion scoring 194. Pakistan’s middle order staggered while chasing the enormous target of 616 runs set by the hosts in the first innings. Top scorer Babar Azam, who made 58, was dismissed by debutant Kwena Maphaka.

On the second day of the 2nd match played here on Saturday (4th Jan, 2025) South Africa scored 615 against Green Shirts for the loss of five wickets as opener Ryan Rickelton chipped in 259 runs.

South Africa, that had opted to bat against Pakistan after winning the toss scored 316 runs at stumps in 2nd of the 2-match series (which Proteas are leading by 1-0) here on Friday (3rd Jan 2025). Unfortunately, for Green Shirts, its left-hand opener Saim Ayub’s ankle got twisted and he had to leave the ground (for a six-week rest).
