Cyclonic Storm Kyarr: Pak coastal areas not under direct threat

KARACHI: In an advisory issued today Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has stated that none of Pakistan’s coastal areas was under direct threat from approaching Super Cyclonic Storm Kyarr.

However, Karachi (and coastal areas of Balochistan) might experience scattered rain under the influence of storm from 28th till 30th of October. PMD further stated that the wind intensity, expected to be between 230-265 km, could cause a sandstorm in some cities in Sindh, including Karachi. Fishermen have been advised not to venture deep into the sea.

According to reports sea water is breaching the coastline and moving into coastal settlements in Balochistan and Sindh. Some areas in Karachi were reported to be flooded due to a rise in sea level sans causing any damage. The Karachi Boat Club near Beach Luxury Hotel and Karachi’s DHA Golf Club, located on the coast, has also experienced minor flooding as tides swell due to the storm’s influence.

The cyclone has moved in the northwestward direction in the last twelve hours and was 745 kilometers southwest of Karachi at 8 am today. PMD predicted that  the cyclone was likely to move in the northwestern direction towards Oman over the next few days. However the Tropical Cyclone Warning Center will continue to monitor the storm’s movement.
