HYDERABAD: The Regional Election Commissioner (REC) Aijaz Anwar Chohan Thursday said implementation on the Election Commission of Pakistan’s code of conduct would be fully ensured.
Chairing a meeting at Shahbaz Hall in Shahbaz Building here, Chohan asked the election candidates to read the code and appraise their supporters about it as well in order to avoid committing a violation.
Chohan said the code of conduct had been formed after a consensus of all political stakeholders and, therefore, it was incumbent upon the political parties and their candidates to implement the same.
He pointed out that the district monitoring committees had been formed with the purpose to observe compliance or violation of the code by the candidates.
The REC said the ECP was trying to ensure that the election process remained free, fair and transparent, providing an environment to the citizens so that they could freely cast their votes.
Chohan informed that there was a complete ban on the wall chalking, billboards and penaflex, adding that only the posters, pamphlets, banners and handbills whose sizes had been approved by the ECP could be published for the canvass. The candidates or their supporter could not fix the posters and banners at the government buildings.
He reminded the candidates that the violation of the code would entail Rs 50,000 penalty and in the case of recurrent violation, the ECP could disqualify a candidate.
