Genetic differences could boost the danger of having eye tumor!

OHIO: According to investigators, certain hereditary dissimilarities might augment the menace of having eye cancer (uveal melanoma), an uncommon type of melanoma that occurs from color cells that verify eye pigment.

Scientists have discovered in many former researches that uveal melanoma is more widespread in Caucasians and those with light eye coloration. Nevertheless, the inherent means triggering this tumor expansion were unidentified.

For conducting the research, team assessed data of over 270 patients suffering from uveal melanoma.

They evaluated some 29 inherited genetic mutations formerly connected with skin melanoma to find out if there was a connected peril of uveal melanoma.

The study uncovered that five genetic mutations have been connected with uveal melanoma risk. The three most noteworthy genetic relations arose in a genetic zone that verifies eye color.

One of the researchers from the Ohio State University, Mohammed Abdel-Rahman noted in the paper published in Scientific Reports: “Our study suggests that in eye melanoma the pigmentation difference may play a direct cancer-driving role, not related to sunlight protection”.

He further added: “This is a very important discovery. It will guide future research efforts to explore the interactions of these pigmentary genes with other genetic and environmental risk factors in cancers not linked to sun exposure, such as eye melanoma. This could provide a paradigm shift in the field.”
