KARACHI: Physician, oriental medicine researcher, scholar, and philanthropist Hakim Mohammed Said, was assassinated this day (17th Oct) 26 years ago.
Mohammad Said was born on 9th January 1920 in Delhi. His ancestors migrated to India from Kashghar. His father, Hakim Abdul Majeed, also used to practice hikmat.
By nine he memorised Holy Quran by heart, after his early schooling, young Mohammad Said went to Tibia College (Delhi) to get the hang of his family métier of tibb.

On 9th January 1948, Hakim Mohammad Said migrated to the Port City and founded Hamdard Pakistan. He established Hamdard Tibia College, which was inaugurated by Ma’adar-e-Millat Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah on 14th August 1958.
Hakim Said penned/compiled two hundred volumes on oriental/natural medicine, philosophy, science, health, religion,literature and social issues.
Besides writing travelogues he also commenced a number of periodicals, for instance, Hamdard Sehat (to edify people about health issue) and Hamdard Naunehal (subtly teaching children about oriental culture and modern world).
In June 1985 Hakim Said inaugurated Madinat-ul-Hikmah harbouring Hamdard Public School, Hamdard Village School, and Hamdard University.
He served as governor of Sindh Province from 19 July 1993 till 23 January 1994. Hakim Mohammad Said was shot dead on 17th October, 1998 as he was heading to attend a medical experiment at the Hamdard Laboratories in Nazimabad area of the Metropolis.
