KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has succeeded in the both constituencies, PS-117, and PS-106 in the by-elections.
MQM candidates Qamar Abbas Rizvi and Advocate Mahfooz Yar Khan were declared successful with big margins.
According to unofficial results, Rizvi bagged more than 10, oo0 votes in PS-117 while in PS-106, Mahfooz Yar Khan got over 11, 000 votes.
14 candidates were nominated for PS-106 including MQM’s candidate Mehfoozyar Khan, PPP’s Sardar Abdul Samad, PTI’s Nusrat Anwar, and Pasban’s Jawad Shirazi. On PS-117, there were 10 candidates in the run including MQM’s S.M. Qamar Abbas Rizvi, PPP’s Javed Maqbool Butt, PTI’s Rafaqat Umar, Naeem Shah of the JUI-F, and Zia-ur-Rahman of Pasban.
The daylong polling on two constituencies concluded peacefully.
The polling began early in the morning at 8.am and continued till 5pm in the evening.
According to media reports, some one hundred polling stations were set up in PS-106 while 84 stations in PS-117. Both seats fell vacant after MQM’s Iftikhar Alam and Dr. Sagheer Ahmed joined Mustafa Kamal’ Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP).
Strict security measures were taken to control law and order situation in the city. More than 300 policemen performed security duties.
