BEIRUT: Syed Hashim Safi Uddin, maternal cousin of slain Hassan Nasrallah, has been made the new Secretary General of Hezbollah here on Sunday (29th September, 2024).
60-year-old Shia cleric, Syed Hashim Safi Uddin, was born in Deir Qanoun En Nahr, southern Lebanon.
After acquiring his edification in Iraq and Iran (where he studied alongside Hassan Nasrallah) Syed Hashim Safi Uddin returned to Lebanon in 1994. Next year he joined the Hezbollah’s highest decision-making body called Majlis-e-Shura as head of the Jihad Council.
He oversaw the organisation’s political, social, and educational programs. In 2017 Syed Hashim Safi Uddin was designated by the United States as Specially Global Terrorist for his role in Hezbollah operations.
