WASHINGTON: By means of an executive order issued on Monday (20th Jan, 2025) President Donald Trump has halted foreign aids pending a review of consistency with his foreign policy.

It may be recalled that Secretary of State Marco Rubio had previously stated “only spend abroad if it makes America stronger, safer or more prosperous”. It is pertinent to mention here that US had doled out sixty-eight billion dollars in 2023 to countries all over the world that makes America the world’s largest donor. USA has not halted aids meant for Israel and Egypt.

According to an internal memo sent to officials and diplomatic missions abroad US State Department has issued a halt to nearly all foreign assistance and paused new aid: “No new funds shall be obligated for new awards or extensions of existing awards until each proposed new award or extension has been reviewed and approved.”
