US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman meets FM Qureshi

ISLAMABAD: US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy R. Sherman met the Foreign Minister of Pakistan Shah Mahmood Qureshi here today (8th of October, 2021). 

During the rendezvous Foreign Minister Qureshi said that Pakistan desired broad-based, long term and sustainable relationship with the US, facilitating promotion of economic cooperation and regional peace. He maintained that regular and organized parleys were necessary in order to achieve shared goals in the region.

Applauding Pakistan’s help in evacuation of foreigners (including American citizens) from Afghanistan, during the recent crisis, US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy R. Sherman   also commended its persistent endeavors for peace in the region. Learning about the earthquake in Hernai on Wednesday (7th of October) Wendy Sherman also expressed her deep grief and sorrow over the human and material loss.

 

During the huddle, FM Shah Mahmood Qureshi commented on the recent development across the border and noted that both the US and Pakistan had commonality of views on Afghanistan. Expressing confidence that the new Afghan government/setup will work for the progress and prosperity of the citoyens, peace and stability, he maintained that a representative and broad-based Afghan government could be a trustworthy partner for the world. He advocated that the global community should extend its support to enable Afghanistan build a sustainable economy.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi reiterated that humanitarian help should be provided to the men, women and children of the war-torn country ameliorating the sufferings of its citizens. Pakistani Foreign Minister grasped at the opportunity to  inform the US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy R. Sherman apropos serious human rights violations in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Shah Mahmood Qureshi held that resolution of the decades-long Kashmir dispute was crucial for the durable peace in South Asia.

US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy R. Sherman, while informing about her meeting with Pakistani National Security Advisor Moeed Yusuf, Tweeted:  “I met yesterday evening with Pakistani National Security Advisor Moeed Yusuf to discuss Afghanistan and areas of cooperation in the US-Pakistan relationship.” 

Meanwhile, American Spokesperson Ned Price stated: “Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman met yesterday (7th of October, 2021) evening in Islamabad with Pakistani National Security Advisor Moeed Yusuf. They discussed developments in Afghanistan and ways to advance cooperation across the bilateral relationship.”

It is pertinent to mention here that ahead of the Pakistan visit US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman had stated: “We seek a strong partnership with Pakistan on counter-terrorism and we expect sustained action against all militant and terrorist groups without distinction…Both of our countries have suffered terribly from the scourge of terrorism and we look forward to cooperative efforts to eliminate all regional and global terrorist threats,” she had said.”
