MUAN CITY (S. KOREA): Jeju Air flight 7C2216, carrying 181 people (175 voyageurs/6 crew) from Bangkok, turned into a fireball while crash landing at Muan International Airport (289km from Seoul) killing all onboard sauf two here at 9am (local time) Sunday (29th Dec 2024).
According to sources the fifteen-year-old Boeing 737-800 jet’s landing gear malfunctioned, due to earlier bird strike, as a result the plane skidded and collided with a wall when pilots tried to land it on its belly. Authorities had issued a bird strike warning just 3 minutes before the plane touched the runway.
A series of explosions followed resulting into death of 179 people onboard. All the passengers were locals (South Koreans) except two foreigners (who were Thai nationals). South Korean budget carrier Jeju Air, commenced its operations fifteen years ago and this happens to be the first accident in its history.
