Radiotherapy harmfully affects lung tumor patients

AIMAN INAM

LONDON: Researchers here have noted that treating patients, suffering from premature phase of lung tumor with radiotherapy can enhance their chances to die due to it rather than the disease itself.

Moreover, the study also found the sturdy connection amid high dosages to the left atrium of the heart and the advanced vena cava that exceed threat of non-cancer casualty.

Barbara Stam from the Netherlands Cancer Institute said:”Our results show that even within a few years a radiation dose to the heart is associated with an increased risk of non-cancer death for early stage lung cancer patients, and they indicate which regions of the heart possibly play a role.”

Scientists observed the records of some 565 patients detected with early stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). All were treated with a sort of radiotherapy called stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT).

SBRT can focus emission rays with intense accurateness on a tumor, thus diminishing the effect on close by organs.

The results were presented here at the European Society for Radiotherapy & Oncology’s ESTRO 35 conference on Monday.
